Red squirrel and pine marten surveys

Solway Ecology carry out both red squirrel and pine marten surveys and habitat appraisals. Both red squirrels and pine martens are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it illegal to intentionally or recklessly kill, injure or capture these mammals or to disturb them.

We have worked on a number of red squirrel projects including preliminary habitat appraisal, drey searches and hair tube surveys.

Drey searches involve a more stringent transect survey which covers the areas of woodland to be impacted upon by the proposed works. These searches are undertaken if visual sightings of squirrels or other evidence of squirrels such as foraging signs are found on site. Once found, camera trapping can be used to determine whether the dreys are in use by red squirrels.

For pine marten, we have undertaken a number of surveys using trail cameras and/or scat surveys where scats are subjected to laboratory DNA analysis to confirm pine marten presence.

Surveys for both red squirrels and pine martens can take place at any time of year.
